Hold My Mule

The latest internet craze is the #unameitchallenge. The challenge takes a version of a live performance of the old gospel song called "Hold My Mule" by Pastor Shirley Ceasar, and skits and dance routines are made around it. The lyrics of the #unameitchallenge are :

Listen

I got beans, greens, potatoes, tomatoes

Lamb, rams, hogs, dogs

Chicken, turkeys, rabbit

You Name It

What makes the lyrics so humorous is that, it's the season of Thanksgiving, and that ever famous questions about "What did you cook?" will come out of many a mouths this season. It's easy to visualize someone's grandmother or mother uttering singing her menu in this format. It was cute in the beginning until some of y'all wanted to twerk and shake to the lyrics of a gospel song. Pastor Shirley Ceasar also found it flattering in the beginning but later took to TMZ to share her thoughts on how she wants her legacy to be preserved. I totally agree with the way she feels. The internet has no chill. Memes and video recreations are spun out just as quick as if there was a full production crew working on it. I do like the fact that the challenge gave new life to a song that many should listen to and live by the message that it portrays.
